In the early 1990s, a young girl named Asma, from Salem district, arrived at the portals of higher education in Kilakarai, accompanied by her aged father, who had just retired from government service. Coming from a modest family background, Asma entered college with dreams in her eyes and determination in her heart.
A bright and disciplined student, she soon distinguished herself in every sphere. She stood first in academics and actively participated in sports and games. As a hostel resident, she was cheerful, energetic and closely connected with her friends. She was an active learner who willingly took up responsibilities and participated in campus activities.
Asma was completing her undergraduate degree in the Department of English and was only two months away from completing her final year in April 1993. At that stage, as was customary in many families, her parents began searching for a suitable life partner for her. Soon after her final semester examinations, she entered into marriage, with the hope of beginning a happy new chapter in her life.
However, life took an unexpected turn.
Within two years, Asma faced circumstances that profoundly affected her physically and emotionally. During the first trimester of her pregnancy, she experienced severe physical and emotional trauma. Eventually, she returned to her parents’ home, carrying not only physical pain but also the deep emotional wounds of a marriage that had not unfolded as she had hoped.
Months passed.
Then, one morning, Asma arrived with her father to meet me. She came not merely seeking sympathy, but seeking an opportunity to rebuild her life through education. She expressed her desire to pursue higher studies in Chennai and create an independent future for herself.
I firmly believed that education could become the turning point in her life.
I immediately contacted the Principal of a reputed college in Chennai and requested that Asma be given admission and the scholarship for which she was eligible on the strength of her academic merit. Her earlier record of excellence became the foundation upon which her new journey could be built.
Asma seized that opportunity.
With determination, perseverance and the support of her family and institution, she completed her MBA from a reputed institution. Her academic performance and abilities opened another important door: she was selected through campus recruitment by a leading multinational company and began her professional career as an HR Management Executive.
The journey was not without challenges.
There were pressures from her husband and in-laws to return to her earlier life. Yet, by then, Asma had discovered something invaluable—her own confidence, independence and ability to shape her future.
She chose to move forward.
Her professional career became only one dimension of her renewed life. Alongside her corporate responsibilities, she involved herself in social service and activities aimed at contributing to society. She transformed her personal adversity into a source of strength and chose to lead a purposeful life dedicated not only to her own progress but also to the service of humanity.
